Autism Treatment Network Receives $12 Million Grant from Health Resources and Services Administration
Autism Speaks' Autism Treatment Network (ATN) has received a three-year, $12 million grant to serve as an Autism Intervention Research Network on Physical Health (AIR-P). The network grant was part of four initiatives developed by the Health Resources and Services Administration and the Maternal and Child Health Bureau under the Combating Autism Act Initiative. This multi-institutional grant, led by the ATN Clinical Coordinating Center at MassGeneral Hospital for Children will support research projects on interventions that have a direct impact on improving the physical health and well-being of children and adolescents with autism. The grant will also expand the ATN's on-going efforts to develop clinical guidelines supported by rigorous research evidence. Read more.
100 Day Kit Now Available in Spanish
Autism Speaks' 100 Day Kit, a resource to assist families in getting through the critical time following an autism diagnosis, is now available in both Spanish and English. Newly diagnosed families can register for a kit or can access a guide online. A bilingual (Spanish/English) member of Autism Speaks “Autism Response Team” will follow up with each family that requests a kit. Read more.
Autism Speaks Debuts Community Specific Web Pages
Autism Speaks announced its new Community web pages, which are designed to connect website visitors to information on resources, news, events and Autism Speaks-funded research in their area. Organized by state, the web pages will also highlight the grassroots efforts of local Autism Speaks volunteers. Read more and visit the community pages here.
Fall Season Kicks Off with Edmonton Capital Region Walk
Fall Walk season began in Canada on Sunday, September 7, when the inaugural Edmonton Capital Region Walk Now for Autism took place at Lions Park in St. Albert, Alberta. More than 1,500 enthusiastic attendees, from 81 walk teams, raised over $153,600. Read more and view photos and video here. Fall Walk season continues this weekend with events in Western New England, Southwest Missouri and Nashville, Tenn.
Inaugural Fall Walks Aim to Break Records
The award-winning Walk Now for Autism program welcomes 10 inaugural Walks to the 2008 fall season that are already surpassing event goals. Many Walks, including the Columbus Walk Now for Autism, are on track to set records. To date, over $150,000 has been raised with 1,300 registered participants for the October 12 event at Ohio State University. Read more.
Toys“R”Us Toy Guide for Differently-Abled Kids Debuts Nationwide
Toys“R”Us has released the 2008 edition of the Toys“R”Us Toy Guide for Differently-Abled Kids, an easy-to-use toy selection guide for anyone who loves and cares for a child with special needs. This year, Meredith Vieira, a longtime advocate for children with disabilities, appears on the cover. The complimentary publication is available at all Toys“R”Us and Babies“R”Us stores and online, in both English and Spanish here. Toys“R”Us is the national sponsor of Autism Speaks' Walk Now for Autism program.
Meeting Addresses Pediatric Neurotransmitter Disease and Autism Commonalities
Pediatric Neurotransmitter Disease (PND) represents a collection of rare diseases in children related to abnormalities in the synthesis and breakdown of the neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin and GABA. As recent awareness of PND has increased, so has the recognition of rare overlaps with autism in certain individuals. Autism Speaks sent representatives to the PND Association meeting in Washington D.C. in July, joining with clinicians, basic scientists and families affected by PNDs to learn more about these rare disorders. Autism Speaks intends to continue to collaborate and benefit from the improved perspectives that come from exploring common ground with associated fields of research and treatment. Read more.
ING Direct Ride Now Roars into Colorado

On Sunday, September 7, more than 500 participants turned out for a beautiful day of motorcycle riding through Colorado for the inaugural ING DIRECT Ride Now Colorado event.
