London Hosts Largest Ever International Autism Research Conference
The 7th Annual International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR) has completed day two of the three day conference in London. Over 1,100 researchers, clinicians and autism specialists are presenting at and attending more than 850 presentations. Among the studies being presented are: the evaluation of head growth rate in infants at increased risk for autism; friendship training for adolescents with high functioning autism; the complex interplay of genetic and environmental interactions and a study on household pesticide use; and a modified diagnostic procedure for toddlers, not previously available. Toys"R"Us Raises More than $1.5 Million for Autism Speaks
Toys"R"Us announced that its second annual in-store fundraising campaign to benefit Autism Speaks raised more than $1.5 million. Toys"R"Us stores from coast-to-coast and www.Toysrus.com collected cash donations to coincide with Autism Awareness Month in April. The 2008 campaign significantly outpaced last year's effort, which raised $1.1 million. Toys"R"Us continues to serve as the national sponsor of the Autism Speaks Walk Now for Autism program. IACC Reviews Progress on Autism Research Strategic Plan
The Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC), tasked by the Combating Autism Act of 2006 to coordinate all efforts within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) concerning autism spectrum disorder, met on May 12 in Washington, D.C. The agenda, which mostly focused on the creation of a strategic plan for autism research, also included reports on services and NIH spending. Read more.
Autism Speaks Chief Science Officer, Dr. Geri Dawson, Featured in Autism Spectrum Quarterly Magazine
The recently released Summer 2008 issue of Autism Spectrum Quarterly features an interview with Autism Speaks' chief science officer Dr. Geri Dawson, who is pictured on the cover. The in-depth interview discusses her decision to leave academia to pursue this important role and details many of Autism Speaks' current and future research initiatives. Read more.
Autism Speaks Co-founders Honored at TIME Magazine's Most Influential People Gala
Autism Speaks co-founders Bob and Suzanne Wright attended the TIME Magazine Top 100 World's Most Influential People Gala on May 8 at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. The Wrights were honored in the "Heroes and Pioneers" category, alongside such figures as Tony Blair, Oprah Winfrey, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and Lance Armstrong. Greece Joins International Autism Awareness Efforts
Autism Speaks staffer Sheila Sullivan presented on autism awareness and global collaboration at the "Learning Differences: Daring to Dream" conference held at the American Community School in Athens, Greece on May 9 and 10. One of Greece's leading television stations covered the conference. Sullivan, in her interview, expressed the need for a worldwide autism awareness movement, and the hope that Autism Speaks can help to facilitate that movement. Read more and watch video here.
New York Mets Host Autism Awareness Day
On May 10, the New York Mets hosted an Autism Awareness Day at Shea Stadium. Guests were treated to a VIP reception which included the opportunity to meet Mets players. The money raised will benefit a variety of state-of-the art educational, treatment and outreach programs serving children affected by autism and their families.
